Licensed multi-material STL tool
Material Divider converts microscopic recessed surfaces in an STL into locked, watertight material inlays while preserving the original exterior geometry.
The exterior stays true.
Why material depth matters
These two layers come from a real sliced print. They show how the material underneath a visible detail can matter just as much as the final top layer.
Layer 3Orange infill occupies almost the entire layer while the dark details are only beginning to appear. If a pale surface is printed above insufficiently deep colour separation, the darker or stronger colour below can remain optically visible.
Layer 4The dark paths now extend through the layer, but they remain tightly surrounded by orange toolpaths. With thin features, translucent light filaments, or too few covering layers, this can produce shadowing, muddy edges, and apparent colour bleed.
What Material Divider changes
Material Divider does not merely paint the final surface. For the depth you choose, it completely separates each selected colour from the main body and creates aligned, locked parts. The body material therefore cannot continue underneath that inlay footprint within those layers, helping prevent lower colours and infill from showing through lighter surface details.
A real, repeatable demonstration
This original CC0 demo plaque contains eight 0.012 mm recessed regions. Material Divider finds those regions, groups them into three colours, and builds a verified four-part assembly. Download both files and inspect the result in your own slicer.
No product geometry and no hidden setup. The plaque was created solely for this public demonstration.

What it handles
Detects shallow surface bands that are easy to miss in ordinary mesh tools, including the supplied model’s 0.009–0.012 mm design levels.
Converts selected regions into material groups with a chosen depth, creating aligned parts that remain mechanically located.
Separate only a microscopic indentation or fill its complete enclosed area. Use marquee selection to assign many regions together and Alt-select to return them to unassigned.
Add lines with round or square ends, rectangles, ellipses, triangles, stars, and editable text directly on the chosen design face.
Confirms generated volumes and watertight geometry before export so obvious mesh failures are caught before slicing.
Creates an assembled 3MF for your favourite 3D printer slicer, with an aligned-STL ZIP available as a fallback workflow.
How to use it
Open or drop an STL, choose Design face, then select the broad bed-facing surface that contains the recessed artwork.
Choose indentation-only or enclosed-area separation, assign individual or marquee-selected regions, or draw new shapes and text directly on the design face.
Choose an inlay depth, generate the locked parts, review the volume and watertight checks, then export the assembled 3MF.
Good to know
Use the assembled 3MF in your favourite 3D printer slicer. It keeps the generated child parts together so you can assign a filament to each one.
It is a fallback. Import all of its STLs together as one object with multiple parts, and do not auto-arrange the individual files.
The right value depends on your layer height. For example, 0.60 mm is three layers at a 0.20 mm layer height.
The tool is designed to preserve the original exterior geometry while converting the recessed design regions into separate locked parts.
